MASTERS DEGREE

GRAPHIC DESIGN & ART DIRECTION

MANCHESTER METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY

AFTER TAKING A BREAK FROM HIGHER EDUCATION, NIA MADE THE DECISION TO UNDERTAKE A MASTERS DEGREE IN GRAPHIC DESIGN AND ART DIRECTION IN ORDER TO OBTAIN SKILLS TO THRIVE WITHIN THE GRAPHIC ART AND DESIGN INDUSTRY.
HAVING STUDIED FINE ART PREVIOUSLY, NIAS STRENGTHS WERE BASED IN HER CONCEPTS AND ABILITY TO DISPLAY MINIMALIST ABSTRACT PIECES IN ORDER TO PROVOKE AN ARRAY OF EMOTIONS FROM AUDIENCE MEMBERS.

THE COMPLETION OF HER MASTERS HAS AIDED IN CREATING WORKS THAT ARE MORE COMMERCIAL AND SEND A CONSISTENT MESSAGE TO GENERATE GROWTH FOR DIFFERENT COMPANIES AND EXTERNAL PARTIES.

Nia has always been passionate about creating with sustainability in mind, which, became a huge factor during her MA study.
Her method of making not only considered materials used within the professional design sphere, but issues surrounding waste and energy usage.
Her priority was to encourage touch and extend the lifespan of disposable design items such as packaging after use.

To do this, Nia experimented with natural products such as Mycelium, Sea moss and corn starch in conjunction with seeds that would be plantable in the home or garden.
Natural dyes were also considered during experimentation stages of mark making such as squid ink and Turmeric. This offered an opportunity to make design more visible without contaminating soil like carbon based inks.

After analysing the most eco friendly method of making, Nia decided to trial the concoctions using screen printing which only uses man power and limits water usage to clean screens between prints.

For the first year of study, Nia wanted to push braille as a integral design feature to normalise 'invisible design' making it more mainstream and inclusive for non sighted individuals.
This played a part in her final pieces which resulted in large embossed braille dots that were filled with a combination of corn starch, baby bio (commonly purchased plant fertiliser ) and seeds to encourage the growth of herbs such as mint and chives.
